Fundamentals of Reinforced Concrete Design of Hydraulic Structures


This event qualifies for up to 18 PDHs


This course will provide a thorough overview of the fundamentals of specifying the fresh and hardened properties of concrete mixes; the review of applicable codes for concrete hydraulic structures; the design philosophy and methodology of reinforced concrete hydraulic structures; and issues associated with the construction process. The course will include actual design examples of frequently used hydraulic structures utilizing current design codes and guidelines that are focused on reducing cracking, limiting deflections, increasing durability, and decreasing permeability.

  •     Properties of fresh and hardened concrete
  •     Types and properties of reinforcement
  •     Concrete Mix Design
  •     Loading Conditions Unique to Hydraulic Structures
  •     Design Examples and Class Problems
  •     Concrete Repair and Remediation
  •     Joint Treatments, Waterstops, Drainage
  •     Software Available for Reinforced Concrete Design

The course is intended as an introductory course for persons who have at least one course in reinforced concrete design.

Speaker and Presenter Information

Randall P. Bass, P.E.
Principal
Schnabel Engineering

 

Randy Bass is a professional engineer and a graduate of Georgia Tech with a BCE (1972) and a MCE degree (1977). His career with dam engineering started in 1978 when he worked for seven years with the Georgia Safe Dams Program. He worked for Dames and Moore for seven years designing and building dams and, prior to joining Schnabel Engineering in 2004, was the water resources engineer with the Portland Cement Association. He is currently a principal with Schnabel Engineering. He has participated in dam owner training workshops in three states, conducted two webinars for ASDSO, and was on the recent peer review team for the review of the Corp of Engineer's national dam safety program.

 

James R. Crowder, P.E.
Principal
Schnabel Engineering

 

Crowder has over 20 years of experience in the design and construction of dams. Mr. Crowder is certified as a Lead Design Engineer by the Georgia Safe Dams Program, and has had significant involvement in the design and construction of reinforced concrete hydraulic structures at over 50 high hazard dams. These structures include more than 25 chute/overflow spillways, over 30 riser/intake structures, and numerous conduits through embankment dams.

 

John P. Harrison, P.E.
Principal
Schnabel Engineering

 

John P. Harrison, PE has over 25 years of experience in dam engineering projects throughout the Eastern United States, including analysis, design, independent review, and construction inspection for new dam and dam rehabilitation projects. Mr. Harrison serves as Technical Leader for dam design in Schnabel's West Chester office, and as an independent structural design resource and reviewer for Schnabel. Mr. Harrison was the lead structural designer or structural reviewer for over 30 structural spillway and intake tower designs. He has served as structural reviewer for six flood protection projects under the USACE Type II Independent External Peer Reviews (IEPRs) program.
