10:45 am   Concurrent Sessions

Cloud Computing – Known Flavors

The definition of cloud computing is still a bit “foggy”. There are external clouds, internal clouds, and even hybrids. Technology companies offer an almost infinite variety of cloud services. It’s not easy to get a handle on what it all means. This session clears the air on the various aspects of cloud computing and their impact on government operations.

4G and the Future of Wireless

We live in a wireless world and the demand will clearly grow exponentially in the years ahead. Where is the industry headed? What new capabilities and capacities are on the horizon? What should you take into account when developing and evaluating systems and applications? This session focuses on the future of wireless technologies and next generation connectivity.

Bob Demmery, Solutions Engineer, Sprint

Storage Trends and Economics

The evolution of storage has taken many turns. Now we are at a point where traditional concepts are becoming unrecognizable. Virtualization, consolidation, collaboration, budget issues and energy concerns – all of these are playing a role in changing the way that we view storage environments. This session looks at trends, standards and innovations in the face of an ever-growing list of storage requirements.

David R. Merrill, Chief Economist, World Wide Marketing and Business Development Department, Hitachi Data Systems

Rethinking the Metrics of Government

Government isn’t a business, nor can it pretend to be. But it can think more like one by utilizing business intelligence to measure performance, analyze outcomes and understand real costs. This session focuses on the most important elements in describing, measuring and controlling the business of government.

Jason Hurd, Vice President, Solution Sales, CA Technologies

Workplace of the Future

Jack Mortimer
, Government Technology magazine

In American history, the single greatest shift in the workplace was driven by the Industrial Revolution as jobs moved from outdoors to indoors. Since then, not much has changed except for further technologization. True, technology has continually and dramatically affected how we work. Yet most people, especially in government, still work in standard office environments. But that’s changing. Is it a new “revolution?” Almost certainly. The only question is to what degree. This session looks at recent research and predictions by Government Technology magazine into the changing workplace. After more than a century of the same basic work environment, is it time to blow up the model?

2:00 pm    Afternoon Break and Refreshments

2:30 pm    Concurrent Sessions

“Everything” as a Service

The term as a service has mostly been associated with software as a service but now refers to other components of cloud computing including communication, data, infrastructure and platforms. The goal is to get customers out of the business of buying and into using. There are numerous advantages but there are also concerns. This session takes a basic look at the as a service approach and how – and if – it can be used securely, efficiently, effectively and economically.

Jana Jackson, Director, Defense Sector, ViON Corporation

Collaboration and Outsourcing – Necessity vs. Reality

In today’s fiscal climate, there is no choice but to do things differently. As a result, organizations are taking a much closer look at collaboration and outsourcing. Some have found that collaboration is fine in theory but not easy to put into practice. Outsourcing has met with mixed results. This session takes an honest and open look at benefits, barriers and reasonable expectations.

Cyber Security: Advanced Persistent Attacks

"Advanced Persistent Threat" (APT) refers to sophisticated, systematic and normally clandestine means to gain continual intelligence on individuals, businesses and government targets. What makes this especially dangerous is that intruders adapt and escalate their tools and techniques as a victim’s capability to respond improves. This session focuses on strategies for recognizing, preventing and responding to what many experts consider our most serious security challenge.

Mike Russo, State Chief Information Security Officer & Acting Chief of Staff, Agency for Enterprise Information Technology, State of Florida

IPv6 – Next Generation Internet Protocol

For the past 30 years, IPv4 has been the publicly used Internet Protocol and is the foundation for most Internet communications. With the rise in the number of mobile devices, computers and users, the old system of addressing networked devices is almost exhausted. IPv6 allows for virtually unlimited numerical addresses, but switching from IPv4 to IPv6 is not necessarily an easy process. This session discusses the factors involved in successfully navigating the transition.

3:45 pm    Executive Reception

Network with your colleagues and discuss technology solutions with the event sponsors.

Gopal Kapur headshotBeatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves!

Gopal Kapur, Founder and President, Center for Project Management

Is there a direct link between high employee morale and high productivity? Absolutely. So why don’t more managers make it a priority? One unfortunate consequence of the economic downturn is the temptation to rely on ‘beatings’ to increase employee productivity. Few feel that they have the time (or energy) to do otherwise. So it’s no surprise that managers are finding low morale to be a key issue among their teams. The first step is acknowledging that some things aren’t under your control. But sitting back and fretting over the economy, reduced budgets and the ever-growing threat of layoffs and outsourcing is not the answer. In this keynote, the ever-popular Gopal Kapur talks about what you – and your bosses – can do to actively create and maintain a productive, spirited work environment.

10:15 am    Morning Break

10:45 am    Concurrent Sessions

Controlling and Securing Mobile Devices

Experts predict that demand for mobile access will explode by 2012. Organizations will be overwhelmed by a wave of personal and portable devices in the workplace as workers insist on being able to work just about anywhere – using their favorite devices regardless of what policies might say. This session discusses how to find the right balance in maintaining control and security while still allowing easy access, convenience and information sharing.

Virtualization Trends – Desktops and Applications

Desktop and application virtualization may not be a brand new concept, but tremendous strides have been made in recent years. As a result, governments are increasingly turning to virtualization to reduce expenses and increase the efficiency of deployment, security, maintenance, support and continuity. This session focuses on the latest trends, approaches and tools.

Social Networking and Digital Records

In this era of open government, the guiding principle is that information and digital records, including various forms of digital communications, are most definitely public assets. The impact of social networking on IT systems and storage – already overburdened – is a wild variable. This session discusses issues, trends, standards and innovations.

Steve Finnern, Vice President of Sales and Operations, SMARSH INC
