Open Roads Open Minds: An Exploration of Creative Problem Solving
Steve Uzzell, Renowned Photographer
Steve Uzzell is a veteran National Geographic photographer and one of the nation's leading corporate photographers. Steve's award-winning approach to his photographic work is driven by the philosophy that an open mind allows solutions to appear in unexpected places and, above all, "preparation leads to magic". Using his striking photographs to illustrate the creative process, Steve inspires us to take advantage of our own experiences and vision to make any venture an adventure.

11:00 am Concurrent Sessions
Legal Ramifications of Social Media
In this era of open government, the guiding principle is that information and digital records, including various forms of digital communications, are most definitely public assets. Government organizations must treat social media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter as extensions of their physical presence and ensure that their employees are aware of their responsibilities towards correct communications, transparency and record retention. This session will focus on the legal and policy issues around social media in government organizations.
Business Intelligence - Managing for Results
Private industry has long used business intelligence and performance indicators to increase efficiency and productivity. Government organizations are increasingly benefiting from the same strategies. This session will cover some of the tools and methods that can be used successfully in the government sector to track, measure and manage key processes and performance. Key points of discussion will include the difference between reports and data as well as dashboards versus analytics.
Open Source - Trends and Strategies
As more and more government entities are experimenting with open systems and applications, lessons are being learned. Some things have been easier than expected and other things have been surprisingly problematic or controversial. This session takes a look at the current state of open source in government and which direction(s) it's headed.
Mobile Computing for the Public
Experts predict that demand for mobile access will explode by 2012. The global market for wireless applications - which barely existed just a few years ago - is growing day by day. Not surprisingly, pressure is mounting on government IT organizations to be more proactive in providing mobile services and applications. This session looks at workable strategies and affordable opportunities that are being implemented in a variety of Arizona government organizations.

Virtualization Trends - Desktops and Applications
Desktop and application virtualization may not be a brand new concept, but tremendous strides have been made in recent years. As a result, governments are increasingly turning to virtualization to reduce expenses and increase the efficiency of deployment, security, maintenance, support and continuity. This session focuses on the latest trends, approaches and tools.
Cyber Security: Advanced Persistent Attacks
"Advanced Persistent Threat" (APT) refers to sophisticated, systematic and normally clandestine means to gain continual intelligence on individuals, businesses and government targets. What makes this especially dangerous is that intruders adapt and escalate their tools and techniques as a victim's capability to respond improves. This session focuses on strategies for recognizing, preventing and responding to what many experts consider our most serious security challenge.
Cloud Computing - 31 Flavors
The definition of cloud computing is still a bit "foggy". There are external clouds, internal clouds, and even hybrids. Technology companies offer an almost infinite variety of cloud services. It's not easy to get a handle on what it all means. This session clears the air on the various aspects of cloud computing and their impact on government operations.
Interoperability - What Has Changed
The terrorist attacks on New York and Washington sparked a broad effort to increase interoperability between public safety organizations. Ten years later, what has been accomplished? New technologies have been deployed to be sure. Are they being used effectively? Have barriers (many of them cultural) been removed or relaxed? This session will provide some answers and some ideas to continue the journey towards interoperability.
3:45 pm Arizona Outstanding IT Professional Awards Program and Reception
Join your colleagues in honoring the winners of the Arizona Outstanding IT Professional Awards and discuss technology solutions with the event sponsors.

GIS - New Year, New Opportunities
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an indispensable part of many, if not most, government services. GIS has already set the standard for collaboration and data-sharing in the public sector, but it is also breaking new ground in web-based functionality and services. This session focuses on new regulations that will facilitate more collaboration and increased transparency in accessing, visualizing and analyzing geographic and geospatial information to improve efficiencies in services delivery for state and local government.
Platform Independent Content
There has been a noticeable increase in employee use of personal technology for government work. Smart phones, tablets, home computers, laptops... This creates certain challenges for IT organizations that must develop applications that are robust and secure while also having the ability to work on more devices. That gives rise to the idea of platform independent content. This session will focus on this new world of ubiquitous devices and how to develop once for all of them.
Integration-as-a-Service
Integration-as-a-Service (SaaS) takes the functionality of system integration and places it into the cloud, providing for data transport between the enterprise and SaaS applications or third parties. This concept has been around for many years but is gaining ground in government. Legacy systems are an ideal candidate for this type of service. Organizations are looking for ways to share legacy data without constructing silo middleware that is application specific or building their own SOA environment. The cloud may be the answer and this session will help you understand Integration-as-a-Service and how you can use it.
Process Improvement in Government
All government organizations - whether federal, state or local - are challenged to find ways to do more with less, without reducing the quality of service provided to constituents. It's more critical than ever for government entities to take a comprehensive, multi-disciplined view of an organization's technology, processes and workforce, and for the IT organization to ensure their capabilities meet the strategic and operational goals of the business. This session will give you practical tips on how to improve efficiencies that apply to any size department or agency.
