10:45 am Concurrent Sessions

Bringing the Clouds Down to Earth

Are you considering moving to the cloud? Benefits of cloud computing are highly touted, but moving from theory into practice is where things get complicated. This session will help you decide what services are cloud candidates, how to successfully transition those services, what to consider when contracting for the cloud, and how to measure your success.

IT Governance and Portfolio Management: Case Study

With higher and higher levels of scrutiny being placed on IT projects, ad-hoc methods of project delivery will no longer work. IT departments are challenged to deliver solutions that are relevant, and to deliver those solutions on time and within budget. IT governance and portfolio management principles are the keys to success. This session will provide practical tips on how to implement IT governance and portfolio management structure, and some pitfalls to avoid.

Citizen Engagement Strategies in Tough Times

In tight budget times, technology can be used to help an organization meet its mission. State and local government technology leaders can become advocates for innovation, helping agencies deliver services in new and creative ways such as web services, mobile apps and Web 2.0 tools. This discussion will provide ideas and examples to engage citizens in innovative ways, and the opportunities presented by tough times to fundamentally change how government operates and provides citizens services.

The Future is Now: Mobile Technology in the Workplace

IT organizations are facing a wave of smart phone and mobile devices in the workplace as employees insist on being able to work just about anywhere. Regardless of what policies might state, workers continue to use them - thereby opening up a host of risks and vulnerabilities. This session discusses how to find the right balance in maintaining device standards, data integrity and security while still allowing easy access, convenience and information sharing.

Shared Services: Best Practices and Opportunities

If there is a silver lining to tough times, it's that government organizations have no choice but to break down barriers in order to foster collaboration and resource sharing. So it's no surprise that current economic pressures are bringing about some remarkably creative leveraging of systems, applications and resources. This session sets out to inspire and evoke new ideas by providing firsthand looks at some ground-breaking innovations and opportunities that go well beyond traditional concepts and boundaries.

Transparency and Open Government

Transparency and open government are currently two of the highest federal priorities. The guiding principle is that actions taken and information maintained by government is a public asset, and whatever information you store may have value to the public. The ramifications on IT systems, policies and personnel can be significant. This session will address these issues and provide an overview of the state of Oregon's efforts to improve transparency and increase citizen access to data.

Technology as a Tool for Innovation

In tight budget times, technology can be used to help an organization meet its mission. State and local government technology leaders can become advocates for innovation, helping agencies deliver services in new and creative ways. This discussion will provide ideas and examples of how innovation occurs, and the opportunities presented by tough times to fundamentally change how government operates.

Beyond Facebook: Using and Managing Social Media in Government

It is undeniable - social media is literally changing the world. Recent events in the Middle East underscore this. Governments are embracing social media and Web 2.0 technologies to varying degrees of success. This session will help you understand what these technologies can - and cannot - do and the risks involved and how to manage them. You will also hear how the next generation of social technology systems can be used for innovative ideas such as problem solving and service management.

Increasing Efficiencies in Government IT

All government organizations are challenged to find ways to do more with less, without reducing the quality of service provided to constituents. It's more critical than ever for government entities to take a comprehensive, multi-disciplined view of an organization's technology, processes and workforce, and for the IT organization to ensure their capabilities meet the strategic and operational goals of the business. In addition, investments in IT must leverage existing innovative, cooperative procurement contracts to maximize buying power and favorable contract terms. This session will give you practical tips on how to improve efficiencies that apply to any size department or agency.
