INSAs Technology and Innovation Council Innovators Showcase

April 28 – May 13: Call for Abstracts
May 16 – June 3: Abstract Review
June 6: Invitations to Finalists
June 28: Innovators’ Showcase Presentations

Date: Tuesday, June 28, 2011
Location: Mitre Corporation, 7515 Colshire Drive, McLean, VA 22102-7539
Event Format: Approximately 30-35 presentations of 8-10 minutes each to evaluation panel
Number of Panelists: approximately 75 technologists/scientists selected by ODNI

INSA is very excited to collaborate with the ODNI to provide a unique new forum and opportunity for INSA members to present their innovative solutions in specific research areas to a qualified panel of scientists and technologists selected by the ODNI to evaluate these research proposals. Interested members are asked to submit an unclassified, one page abstract to INSA for initial review and evaluation by INSA’s Tech Council, chaired by Bob Farrell of Seneca Technology Group. Qualified submissions with be invited to present a more detailed classified briefing at the Innovators’ Showcase.

Innovators’ Showcase Abstract Submission Requirements
Submit unclassified research project abstract to abstracts@insaonline.org by Friday, 13 May. One page abstract should be typed in 12 point font or larger and contain the title of the project, a brief discussion of the statement of the problem, specific aims, and the project’s specifics aims or hypothesis (es), and include a concise overview of the research design including methods. Plans for data analysis and/or future research areas and ongoing related research (internal or external to submitting organization) should also be included. Abstract should be submitted with a cover letter that includes the name, address, phone, fax number, and email address of the principal investigator (PI) and the Co-PI (as appropriate), as well as the sponsoring corporation/institution. Cover letter should also identify the specific research topic area from the research areas of interest listed below. Also include a third page which contains a biographical sketch of the PI and Co-PI (as appropriate).

Research Areas of Interest
Energy storage and harvesting: creative ways to capture energy from non-traditional sources (e.g., nature or life forms); creative storage and retrieval of energy: capacitors, batteries, etc.; autonomous methods to conserve or transfer energy in systems with diminutive duty cycles . Radiological, Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Agent – Detection at a distance: ability to detect and identify trace elements and chemical compounds from a significant stand-off distance; ability to detect biological structures and compounds from a significant stand-off distance. Supercomputing and alternative computer architectures: ultra high speed computation; communication and control of processing; innovative storage solutions. Social and Human Sciences: research in human motivation, stimuli and response; cultural exploitation; biometric research; cognitive science. Information Technology, to include but not limited to: entity – relationship resolution; data discovery in unstructured environments; data search techniques, tools, and technologies; determining and preserving data origin, through tagging or other less obvious means, regardless of data evolution; human language technology; visual, speech, text, or short message; exploitation of video/motion imagery. Cyber Security: secure and resilient architectures; innovative information protection; trust assurance mechanisms; forensics. Communications – Novel and/or large volume, high speed secure techniques: vibration; photon transmission; unusual antenna forms; other non RF transmission techniques. Robotics: autonomous operation; miniaturization; enhanced imaging and visual processing capabilities. Other Mission topics not covered above.

For a more complete picture of the S&T interests of the community, please look at the IC S&T Investment Framework available on Intelink at the following, http://www.intelink.ic.gov/sites/acquisitiontechnology/default.aspx.

The mission of the US Intelligence Community, according to the DNI website, includes the phrase: “Collect, analyze, and disseminate accurate, timely, and objective intelligence, independent of political considerations…” Other capabilities that you believe meet the Mission objective, but are not included in the specific research areas of interest listed above may be submitted for consideration.
