High Power Radio Frequency/Microwave Directed Energy Weapons (HPM DEWs)

High Power Radio Frequency/Microwave (HPM) Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) have the potential to provide the War-fighter with an Unconventional Electronic Attack (UEA) capability that goes beyond traditional Jammers, since they can attack all forms of electronic systems, not just receivers, and produce long lasting effects that remain after the initial energy is gone.

This presentation is an introduction to HPM DE Weapons and their effects. We will cover, what is an HPM DE weapon, the type of weapons – Narrowband and Wideband, why the Warfighter and DoD are interested in this technology, how HPM DEWs are similar to, but different from traditional Electronic Warfare/Attack (EW/EA) and Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP). We will also cover how the HPM energy couples in to a target’s electronics via intentional and unintentional Ports of Entry and the type of effects it can cause ranging from long term electronic upset to permanent damage. We will also cover some of the basic modeling and simulation (M&S) tools for computing/estimating the probability of target failure as a function of weapon power density and range. Finally, we will discuss mitigation techniques and show an example of how to estimate hardening parameters for a notional helicopter against an HPM weapon.

Registration will close one hour prior to the start of the webinar (1pm ET)! Any registrations taken after this time will not be able to view the live webinar.

Registration and attendance at this live event is complimentary for AOC members and non-members alike. However, you must be signed into your AOC account to register. If you don't have an AOC account, but would like to register for free, please join here as a "Guest Non-Member."

Speaker and Presenter Information

John T. Tatum is an electronic systems engineer with over 45 years of experience in the areas of Radar, Electronic Warfare, Electromagnetic Effects and Protection and Directed Energy Weapons and their effects. He is currently working for the SURVICE Engineering Company as a consultant in the areas of Electronic Warfare (EW) and RF Directed Energy Weapons (RF DEWs). He also acts as a Subject Matter Expert for the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center (DSIAC) and provides information on RF DEW technology and effects. Before SURVICE, he worked for the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland for almost 37 years {formerly the Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL)} where he directed and participated in investigations of the effects of RF/Microwave pulses on military systems and supporting infrastructure to develop protection requirements as needed. Mr. Tatum also investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of several HPM DEWs of interest to the Army. At the time, Mr. Tatum was the Army chairman of the HPM DE JMEM Working Group and chaired the HPM Effects Panel for the OSD Technology Panel on DEW. He is a fellow of the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS), a member of the Association of Old Crows (AOC) and the Institute for Electrical/Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has published several papers on HPM effects investigations, effects methodology, engagement models and effects data bases for both DEPS and IEEE conferences. Mr. Tatum also enjoys being a volunteer for the Maryland schools and libraries where he teaches Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) subjects to students of all grades.
