Cyber and Network Security Update
Alexandria I/II
Information integrity is of primary importance in government systems, but by definition government services must be open to all citizens, making the security mission even more difficult. This is compounded by the fact that governments are a favorite target of viruses and hackers such as the recent attack on the MTA by "Anonymous". The use of mobile devices, including laptops and PDAs, simply adds to the complexity. This session looks at the latest strategies, solutions and how to keep your jurisdiction out of the headlines.

IT Extreme Makeover: Case Study
Drake II
The City of Santa Clara, in the center of Silicon Valley, faced a variety of IT challenges including growing costs, increasing complexity and evolving expectations. Like many public sector organizations, the City struggled with aligning to meet City priorities and enhancing citizen services while reducing costs. The City knew they had to make a paradigm shift and go through an extreme makeover to succeed. This session will cover the pre- and post-makeover states, highlighting the practices and strategy put into place to become the partner of choice for IT initiatives for the City.

Cloud Computing in Government: Case Study
Drake I
Cloud computing and the possibilities for government have been talked about for several years now. Many have questioned whether the model would work for government, with the myriad of regulatory and legal requirements for issues such as data protection, data sharing, transparency, security and retention. You may be surprised to hear how many jurisdictions have already solved these issues and are now using enterprise wide cloud-based service delivery models. In this session you will hear what it takes to move to cloud computing environment from a government case study perspective - the challenges, benefits and ideas on how to move ahead.

As a result, government organizations are continuing to focus on simplifying, unifying and collaborating across entities to meet these challenges. Legacy Systems Modernization: Case Study
Drake II
Given an uncertain financial outlook, IT shops will (again) be asked to do even more with even less. A good place to start is with core enterprise applications and software platforms. Are there successful strategies to modernization? What is the business value to the organization? Is there an alternative to complete system replacement that extends the useful life of a legacy system? This session offers ideas and real-world examples of modernization strategies, explores policy issues, and helps separate some of the myths from the facts.
Michael Falkow, Assistant City Manager, City of Inglewood, California
Social Media: Value in Government
Drake I
It seems that everyone - from the newest movie star to political candidates - are inviting you to follow them on Twitter or friend them on Facebook. Jurisdictions are increasingly creating Facebook accounts, tweeting and developing Wikis. But the questions remain - Is there a business case? Will social media continue to change how we govern or is it a fad? Should agencies develop policies around privacy, security and public records or wait it out? In this session you will hear how the City of San Francisco is using social media tools and what they have learned.
Interoperable Broadband Initiatives in the Bay Area: JPA
Alexandria I/II
Next-generation broadband is getting a lot of attention (and funding) recently, and it plays a key role in public safety priorities. This session focuses on the recent the work being done by the Joint Powers Authority (JPA) to build and govern a Bay Area-wide public safety interoperable communications system, recent developments, and emergency response capabilities when the project is complete.
