Basics Of Fire And Fire Science Online Training

A Certified Fire Protection Specialist® (CFPS®) should possess an understanding of fire science and behavior. The Basics of Fire and Fire Science Online Training offers a review of the chemistry and dynamics of fire, including the chemical composition of ignition, the roles of pyrolysis and heat of gasification in a self-sustaining fire, heat release rate, fuel loading, flame spread, and smoke development.

This course offers important resources on fire loss data, including a home structure fire report PDF and flashover demo video. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about methods of fire detection and ways fires can be extinguished.

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Recall primary topics located in Section 2 of the Fire Protection Handbook® (FPH).
  • Define the chemistry and physics of fire.
  • Explain the structure of premixed and diffusion flames.
  • Describe the implications of burning fuel-rich, oxygen-rich, and stoichiometric fuel-air ratios.
  • Use the physics of fire configuration to determine flame shape and motion, heat transfer, and flame-spread rates.
  • Identify features of fire growth.
  • Describe the four ways to classify fire.
  • Explain how compartment boundaries change fire growth
