Special Equipment, Processes, and Facilities Online Training

A Certified Fire Protection Specialist® (CFPS®) frequently needs to know the operating principles and hazard control safeguards for a variety of specialized equipment, such as IT and electrical equipment, materials-handling equipment, and refrigeration systems. The Special Equipment, Processes, and Facilities Online Training covers these topics as well as chemical processing, semiconductor manufacturing, and the flammability, toxicity, and safety group classifications of refrigerants. The discussion concludes by acquainting participants with the challenges and safeguards related to the new technologies of energy storage systems (ESS) and solar power.

In the Special Equipment, Processes, and Facilities Online Training, participants are engaged through video presentations by NFPA® and industry thought leaders regarding hot work precautions and risks in photovoltaic (PV) systems. The module also includes an in-depth US Chemical Safety Board video on hot work scenarios and an NFPA and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) refrigerant report PDF.

At the end of the online training, you should be able to:

  • Recall primary topics located in Sections 8 and 9 of the Fire Protection Handbook® (FPH).
  • Describe the precautions of hot work.
  • Determine the spacing requirements given a chemical or type of equipment used to produce chemicals.
  • Use a table to determine whether or not a vehicle is approved for operation in a Class I, II, or III location.
  • Determine suppression systems best suited for IT fire protection and safety.
  • Use refrigerant safety group classifications to determine level of flammability and toxicity.
  • Describe the three types of refrigeration systems (mechanical, absorption, and steam-jet ejectors) and their hazards.
  • Determine the best placement of a refrigeration system given an environment.
  • Assess hazard level given a refrigerant and environmental condition.
  • Identify fire and health hazards associated with semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Describe ESS and solar system applications and types.
  • Outline the steps to take during a fire incident that involves ESS and solar systems.
