CFPE General Knowledge Online Training

The CFPE General Knowledge Online Training provides an overview of select requisite knowledge for the five major domains and job performance requirements found in the 2014 edition of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications Fire Inspector and Fire Plan Examiner.

You need to take this course as a building block of learning to understand the basics of a CFPE.

Specifically, you will learn the basics of a typical plan set and the various aspects involved with plans and shop drawings. Using an online version of a magnifying glass, you will learn to read and interpret plans at a basic but detailed level and determine occupancy and construction classification based on the applicable standards. Lastly, you will learn how to determine the fire rating of construction components in a plan set and determine compliance with a building's construction classification.

The course will make use of learner-driven and interactive exercises, site plans, short videos, and code documents to impart information, allow practice, and reinforce learning in preparation for the CFPE exam.

Upon completion you should be able to:

  • Describe the components of a typical plan set
  • Identify the typical symbols used on plans and drawings in the jurisdiction
  • Interpret basic plans, floor plans, and shop drawings
  • Describe the types of occupancy and/or construction classification defined by applicable codes and standards
  • Determine the occupancy and/or construction classification of the building or space
  • Determine the fire rating of construction components depicted on a set of plans
