Predictable Use of Multicore in the Army and Beyond
Complex, cyber-physical DoD systems, such as aircraft, depend on correct timing to properly and reliably execute crucial sensing, computing, and actuation functions. In this webcast, SEI staff members Bjorn Andersson, PhD, Dionisio de Niz, PhD, and William Vance of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center will discuss using real-time software on multicore processors. Specifically, they will review the challenges that DoD and civilian systems face and the proven solutions that are available.
What Attendees Will Learn
- Why timing requirements matter
- The potential severity of being unaware of resource contention and not addressing it
- State-of-the-art tools and techniques to satisfy the real-time requirements of software executing on multicore processors
- How the DoD can use (and has used) these tools
Who Should Attend?
- DoD program managers and those who want to know about the opportunities and risks in using multicore processors
- Certifiers and those who want to know about tools and techniques that can be used to create certification evidence
- Software architects and those who want to know how to architect software so that real-time requirements are satisfied
- Software developer and those who want to know how to choose hardware, programming languages, and solution concepts so that real-time requirements are satisfied
- Software testers and those who want to know about formal verification techniques and testing techniques to make sure that real-time requirements are satisfied
Speaker and Presenter Information
Bjorn Andersson, PhD, is a principal researcher at the Software Engineering Institute. He worked on multicore processors before the word multicore processors existed (it was called chip multiprocessors then) and has continued since then.
Dionisio de Niz, PhD, is a principal researcher at the Software Engineering Institute. He is the technical director of the Assuring Cyber-Physical Systems (ACPS) directorate.
William Vance is a computer engineer at U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center and TriVector. He has been involved in the creation of guidance for the use of multicore processors for army aviation.
