With the rapid evolution of information technologies, cyberspace and intelligence capabilities, we are at the apex of the Information Age. As evidenced by the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, information and intelligence are now critical components of modern warfare, and global powers are racing to achieve information dominance.

Information warfare is an evolving concept on the battlespace use of information and communication technology to achieve strategic dominance over an adversary. This kind of warfare can include components like network jamming, drone interference, disinformation campaigns, surveillance and other tactics aimed at denying an opponent’s information advantage.

Today, the U.S. military is codifying information warfare into its organizations and operations. The Marine Corps and the Air Force have efforts underway to elevate information warfare to a warfighting function and make it a central element of command decisions.
