GIS for State and Local Government Asset Management Series
When infrastructure spending, GIS (Geospatial Information Systems), and asset management are combined, state and local governments can further enhance their operations and service delivery. Asset management involves tracking and analyzing the performance of physical assets (such as roads, bridges, and water systems) to optimize their use and minimize maintenance costs. By integrating GIS into asset management, governments can gain a comprehensive view of their infrastructure assets, including their condition, age, and maintenance history, which can inform better investment decisions. This data can be used to:
- Prioritize infrastructure projects
- Identify areas for improvement
- Ensure that resources are allocated efficiently
Using GIS as the core for a system of record provides a means of creating the Digital Twin. The Digital Twin provides the ultimate link for both insight and engagement. By leveraging these technologies, state and local governments can maximize the lifespan and performance of their infrastructure assets while minimizing costs and disruptions to the community. Ultimately benefiting constituents and driving economic growth, this approach can result in:
- Improved service delivery
- Greater accountability
- Resilient infrastructure systems
