Future of Financial Crimes Speaker Series: Latitudes and attitudes – Zooming in on geospatial data, privacy and the law in the digital age

We invite you to join us for the next program from the Future of Financial Crime speaker series, “Latitudes and Attitudes – Zooming in on Geospatial Data, Privacy and the Law in the Digital Age.” Advancements in technology now make it much easier and less expensive to collect and monitor an individual’s location. Government agencies around the world are beginning to recognize the power of this information to address a number of missions, including public transportation, emergency response and law enforcement. However, society’s expectation of privacy with respect to location is evolving and legal and policy communities are struggling to apply the existing framework to this new technology.

Mr. Pomfret will provide an overview of law in the United States with respect to location privacy. In this interactive program, we will also discuss why location information is unique from a privacy standpoint and the challenges associated with trying to regulate the collection, use and transfer of location information. Specifically, the discussion will focus on the impact that legal and policy developments are likely to have on the government’s use of geospatial technology for law enforcement, including such matters as:

  1. Recent case law involving law enforcement use of technology to monitor a suspect’s movements;
  2. Proposed legislation that would impact the ability of government agencies to use tracking devices and/or obtain location information from third party providers; and
  3. The potential privacy implications that will arise by the expected growth in the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
