Strength Selection for Static Slope Stability Analysis

This webinar will provide practical guidance on the selection of soil shear strength parameters for static slope stability analysis. Topics covered include:  stress-strain behaviors of cohesionless and cohesive soils and their relationships to strength selection; drained and undrained strengths and their application in stability analysis; the differences between effective stress and total stress analysis methods; loading cases for stability analysis and appropriate strength selection for each case; methods for selection of strength parameters from field and laboratory data.

Speaker and Presenter Information

John W. France, PE, D.WRE is a registered professional engineer employed by AECOM as Dams Technical Practice Network National Leader. He received BS and MS degrees in civil engineering from Cornell University. Mr. France has 40 years of consulting engineering experience, during which time he has worked on hundreds of civil engineering projects. For the past 34 years his professional career has been focused on dam engineering and dam safety services. During his career, Mr. France has been involved in various capacities in evaluating and remediating stability issues for earth dams. He has written technical papers on the topic, and he coordinated a special session on shear strength selection for stability analysis at the Dam Safety 2015 Conference. He has been an instructor for ASDSO’s previous stability analysis course in 2014 and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ courses on embankment dam design.

Christina Winckler, P.E. is a registered professional engineer, who is currently a project manager in AECOM's Water Business Unit in Denver, Colorado. She received her MS degree in civil engineering with geotechnical focus from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1998. Ms. Winckler also received a second MS degree in civil engineering with geotechnical focus from University of Colorado at Boulder in 2001. Ms. Winckler has over 14 years of consulting engineering experience, of which the past 10 years has been focused on dam engineering and dam safety services. She has been responsible for numerous stability analyses for dams, and she was a presenter at a special session on shear strength selection for stability analysis at the Dam Safety 2015 Conference.
