Everyone has seen media reports that Russian soldiers are using personal cellphones, rather than encrypted communications, because they made the mistake of destroying 4G and 5G towers. In military terms, they find themselves operating in a “denied environment,” because they accidentally rendered their comms network inoperable.

All soldiers in a combat situation are operating at the “tactical edge,” where things like limited communications and information availability are the norm. Despite the U.S. military being the best in the world, this is a perpetual problem. Giving them the tools to gather the right information and make the right decisions is critical. Programs such as Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) are aimed at minimizing the impact of denied environments.
