Letting the Good Ones In, Keeping the Bad Ones Out: Managing Access for Zero Trust

The central premise of Office of Management and Budget Memo 22-09 laying out the Federal Zero Trust Strategy is that no actor, system, network, or service operating outside or within the security perimeter is trusted. Controlling access is everything. This makes defining identity crucial – not just for people, but for every device of any kind that tries to access an agency system.

The strongest form of identity management is attribute-based, moving beyond one’s role or position to a host of other characteristics, from behavioral to physical to time-sensitive. It takes multi-factor authentication (MFA) to a whole new level, but it requires reliable attributes and quality data to implement.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline the role of identity in a zero trust architecture
  • Review different mechanisms for creating and confirming identity
  • Delineate the range of attributes that can be defined for access control, for individuals and devices
  • Identify the metrics for assessing data quality and data control
