Federal government travelers cut their spending by more than a billion dollars so far in 2013, largely by cutting down on conference spending, the Federal Times reported last week.

Travel-related charges to the SmartPay charge card program fell 17%, from $7.3 billion to about $6 billion -- and more than 40% from the $9.6 billion government workers spent on travel in fiscal 2011.

Navy Gold Coast Small Business Procurement Event: First-hand reporting on DoD and USN budgets and future procurements

This week in San Diego, over 1100 registrants heard presentations on how to do business with the Navy. Although billed as a Small Business event, it was equally attended by small, medium and large industries - all hoping to improve their understanding of the upcoming opportunities.

The event was well organized and the information presented was valuable, however this year there were only TWO of the systems commands presenting: NAVFAC and SPAWAR. Unlike years past, there was no representation from NAVAIR, NAVSEA, ONR, NAVFAC and NAVSUP. This was a huge disappointment to the crowd and will cause attendees to reevaluate future interest in attending. However, if your pursuits were in the Construction or Command and Control sectors, there was still considerable information to be gleaned.

DISA Industry Day: Times have changed

I joined 400 of my favorite colleagues last week to hear DISA's annual Forecast to Industry. I have attended this forum at Tampa, Disneyworld, Grand ole' Opry (almost, it flooded out), Disneyland and other exotic locations. This year we congregated in the conference room at the DISA Headquarters on Fort Meade. Have times changed!! Despite the fact that the event was streamed live over the Internet to anyone who signed up, we were separated from our electronic devices and spent the day in blissful isolation, reviewing the small list of upcoming opportunities for industry. More Event Cancellations + Something to Share with the Corporate Office

First, here's some news on continued government event cancellations. Word on the street is that GFIRST 2013 will not take place this year "due to all of the budgetary/travel restrictions." Scheduled from August 25 to 30, the Government Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (GFIRST) "is a group of technical and tactical practitioners from incident response and security response teams responsible for securing government information technology systems and providing private sector support." There's no official posting yet, but expect one soon. That's too bad, as this has been a successful event for many of our clients in the past. Hopefully it will be again in the future.
